Old Benque is a collection of four short stories written in Spanish which integrate folklore and prime historical events in the early days of the settlement of “old bank” or Benque Viejo, as the settlers called it.
Each story presents an experience with the supernatural claimed as real by the old generation and is presented in a cultural context within the changing society. The collection in fact represents a scenario of the main beliefs coupled with a changing order as related by the remaining few who treasure the past.
We hope this 25th anniversary edition may continue to promote the magic of the oral tradition in western Belize among generations to come.
